This lesson was about personal, moral, and social development.

WE had to watch video and listen to a podcast.

THen we had to answer questions about both of them.

Lesson 5 Discussion

YouTube Video Questions:

•What are some of the myths about Asian American students in the classroom that Diane speaks about?

Diane talks about how we are always thinking that Asian Americans are good at math don’t really need help with getting a successful education. The Asian Americans are always pointed out because people tend to look on them more for intelligence. The myths and stereotypes are not true.

•How does Diane suggest teachers reach out to Asian students?

Diane wanted them to be treated like the rest of the students. She also says that we need to help them so that we won’t assume that they understand it. We can reach out to them by asking if they have questions or need help. Also, we can Put them in small groups to help them with understanding language better.

•How are Asian students and their non-Asian counterparts affected by inappropriate teacher expectations and stereotypes?

The teachers expect them to know everything already. The Asians should be taught equally and not to be stereotyped. They do not take the time to ask if they understand it correctly. Any student can struggle no matter where they are from.

•Describe some things that you would use to build cultural cohesion and understanding in your classroom?

I would watch my classroom very carefully. I would not stereotype my students. If one of my students, that was not from American, was struggle, I would try my best to make sure that they understand the material being taught. My students will be treated all the same.

Podcast 2 questions:

•According to Anita, what percentage of the current population speaks a language other than English?

18% speaks another language other than English.

•How do children from countries such as Columbia address their teacher? Why?

They call their teacher “Teacher”. They call their teachers that because they think that it is rude to call them by their own name.

•People from Argentina think that it is rude to do what? Why?

They think it is rude to look an adult directly in the eye. If they are asked to do so, they might have trouble looking at them.

•Asian children are too polite to do what?

Many Asians are too polite to disagree. They may shake their head in agreement, but that don’t mean that they agree, they are just too polite.

•In some cultures, a note written in red means what?

A note written in red is an insult because red means death. A note from a teacher written in red may upset the parent and child.

Summary:

I enjoyed doing this lesson. I have always heard the Asians are smart stereotype. By doing these question, it gained my knowledge on the subject. Listening to the podcast was interesting to me. There are other races or cultures that have different views on things. As teachers, we need to know these things because there are so many students of different races.

Research Question:

What can we teachers need to do to make sure that no Asian student is stereotyped?

Research Analysis:

Asians have a harder time at getting in to better colleges because of their race. “In a 2009 study of more than 9,000 students who applied to selective universities, the sociologists Thomas J. Espenshade and Alexandria Walton Radford found that white students were three times more likely to be admitted than Asians with the same academic record.” At the bigger colleges, Asians are very underrepresented. They even make up to 40 to 70 percent of public schools said the website. Asian Americans have a hard time fitting in in the school systems. If they do succeed, they are always picked on and called being Asians. This may not sound like an insult but to the Asians it is.  Some people worry that if the admissions to the colleges were based just on academics, that they would be mainly made up of whites and Asians.

Research Summary:

I really enjoyed doing this research. I found some things that I didn’t really know. I think that Asians should be treated just as any other race. It’s not fair for them to no get into a college just because of their race.
