Lesson 7

Lesson seven was a very interesting lesson. We had to watch a video that went along with this lesson. The video was about all the different types of family that there are in society today.

Lesson 7 Discussion

Do you think it would be important to show this video in your classroom? If so, why? If not, why not?

I think that it would be important to show this video in my classroom because it is important that kids know what each type of family is. Because in the classroom, there can be all types of families. With that, each student need to know about all the different types because they may be living with those types of families.

•What kinds of problems can you envision if you were to show this video to your students? Describe at least two problems.

One type of problem I can envision that would happen would be that a student or students would not understand that there are different types of families. They would have questions about the families and why are they like that. Another type of problem I can envision that would happen would be that there would be one student that after watching the video they would pick on the other students that had those types of families because he/she doesn’t understand them.

•How would you address or solve the problems that you described in response to the above question? Be specific.

I would address the first problem I stated with a day where we would discuss the different types of families. I would see who had all the different types and if they had any questions they could ask what they wanted to ask me or the other student if they didn’t understand why their family was like that. I believe that a student could learn a little from other students if they didn’t understand as well as from the teacher. I would address the second problem by pulling the student aside and ask him/her why they was picking on the student/students. I would try to explain why their family was different from his/her family. If he/she had any question I would tell them that they could ask me. If none of that would work I would address administration to see if they could explain it better to them.

•Do you think that there is such a thing as the "perfect" family? Why or why not?

I do not think that there is such a thing as the “perfect” family. Nobody is perfect so no family is perfect. Each family has their own flaws. And each family makes their mistakes. They have to work together to fix those flaws and mistakes. If a family member doesn’t agree with another family member, I think they need to sit down and talk about their problem.

•How would you feel if someone said bad things about your family and what would you do about it?

If someone was to say bad things about my family I would be very angry. I am very protective over my family and I don’t want nobody to talk bad about my family. My family is very close to one another that we don’t let nobody talk bad about anybody. What I would do if someone did talk bad about my family is that I would try to address them in the nicest way possible. I want to know why they are talking bad about my family.

•What did you learn from the video? Can you relate to any of the experiences described or illustrated by some of the people in the video?

What I learned from the video was that it doesn’t matter what kind of family a person has, it’s the love from one another that makes them a family. They all really love one another and they are trying to get everybody to see that.

•Regarding the "Gay or Straight" video - Is a person "born" gay or lesbian? Explain.

According to the video, a person could be born gay or lesbian. They could do this because of their hormones. During the pregnancy, the woman could produce hormones that could affect the child in the future.

•Also, can a person become gay by associating with gay people? Explain.

A person could have influences from associating with gay people. They could be around them so much that they start acting like them and picking up on how they act toward other people.

Summary:

I really like this lesson. I learned a lot from the videos that we had to watch along with the lesson. It opened my eyes to all the different thing that went along with gay and lesbian and with the different types of families.

Research Question:

What could teachers do to help the students who are confused about being either gay or lesbian?

Research Analysis:

Students in middle and high school can be very mean to other students. When students don’t “fit in” with the crowd they are picked on because they are different. Each student has their own outtake in life. Whether that is them being gay and lesbian to wanting to be in the popular crowd. Students don’t understand the impact of what they say can really do to a person. It could cause lifelong damage to a person. In a book that I found on google, it states of some way that teachers could help with this problem in their classrooms. One part of the book it says that “If a teacher does not address the negative comments, the gay or lesbian student can further feel alienated and alone.” This is a very true statement because no student needs a teacher to agree with the student that is giving the negative comments. A teacher should address the issue and solve it even if they don’t agree with it. They need to treat every student with respect and equality.

If a student is gay or lesbian the teacher should make sure that no other students are being mean to that student. Each classroom teacher should provide and safe place for every student that they are teaching. In the book on google it says that most teacher are unaware of their own discrimination until they are called out on it. It also says that “Teachers have a misconception that they are not responsible for bias in the classroom and the students are. If teachers believe that students, not teachers, are to blame for gender bias, it will continue.” This is saying that it is all of the students fault for all of the bias that goes on in the classroom which, I think, is not true. I believe that it is both the teachers and the students. Teachers have a huge impact on students because a teacher is someone that a student should be able to look up to and when they are being bias that would be hard to do.

Research Summary:

The research that I found was very interesting. I found out things that I didn’t know. Teachers need to know that they may be being discriminative toward some of their students. They may not know that they are until it is to late.
