In lesson2, We had to listen to a podcast and answer some questions on it. The questions were based on our opinions on the podcats.

Lesson 2

Think of a teacher you had who influenced you. What made this person a good teacher?

The teacher that influenced me to become a teacher was my 9th grade math teacher. She kept things interesting when we would do problems in class. She would also let us do some activities that went along with our lesson so we could understand it better.

Students often identify teachers who were not very personable or approachable as among their most effective teachers. Is it possible to be personable, caring and effective? When would it be a liability to be personable or approachable? When would it be an advantage?

I think that it is possible to be personable, caring and effective. I think that I would be a liability if a teacher got to personable with a student. There should be a certain limit to how personable a teacher should be with a student. It would be an advantage if the student didn’t have the right help at home and the teacher was just trying to help out the student.

Podcast questions:

•What does Anita describe as the goal of educational psychology?

To go beyond personal experience.

•Anita mentions some compelling research. What was the research and how did it affect the students?

The research that was done was to see how an effective and non-effective teacher had an impact on student’s test scores. The effective teacher from the 3 thru the 5 had the average math test score of the 96 percentile. Students in the same district with a non-effective teacher was in the 44 percentile. The kids that had an effective teacher for 3 years in a row scored better on the test.

•Anita describes 8-10 methods teachers could employ to help create student success. These methods help to foster what she describes as the single most significant predictor of student success. In your opinion, describe 2 or 3 of the most important methods she mentions in her Podcast.

Teacher-student relationship: Teachers that have a relationship to some students could help the student achieve high goals. The student may want to work better in the classroom knowing that there is somebody who cares what they do.

Student belonging- A student needs to feel as though he or she belongs within the classroom. We as teachers need to make sure that each student feels like that do belong in our classroom.

Summary:

I really enjoyed doing this lesson. The podcast was very informative. She gave things that I am going to take and maybe use within my own classroom. We as teacher need to make sure that no student doesn’t feel as though he or she belongs within the classroom.

Research Question:

How can teachers help the students who feel as though they do not belong in their classroom?

Research Analysis:

On the website that I did some of my research on, it had some very informative information that I didn’t really know. On the website it gave a list of things that a student knows that they belong within a group. I didn’t know that that was what some kids thought. Kids within in a school system rely heavily on what the people around them think. Where it is how they look, to who they hang out with. Students care about what all their friends think. To name a few of the things on the list, the students said that they know they belong to a group if the group ask them for help sometime, knows how to spell their name, welcome them back no matter what, and they could disagree without making them feel put down.

Research Summary:

I really like doing this research over my question. I thought that I was a really informative research. As teachers, we need to be sure that we make every student belongs within our classrooms. If we see that a student is by themselves, we could put them in a group that we think could help the student feel more comfortable in the classroom.
