Lesson 6

In lesson six, we had to talk about dropout rate for boys and girls. We had to read a couple of articles that went along with this lesson aswell. Overall this was a great lesson.

Lesson 6 Discussion

Boys Dropout Article questions

•Why do boys drop out of school at a much higher rate than girls? Provide some reasons.

Boys drop out of school more than girls because, like the article said, they get charged with real crimes. They also get expelled from school more than girls. Boy were suspended at twice the rate as girls according the article.

•What can you do, as a classroom teacher, to help reduce this high dropout rate for boys? Explain.

As a classroom teacher, I could help reduce the dropout rate by just trying to get to know the kids life outside of school. If they had any problems outside of school I would let them know that I will be here to talk about anything if they need it.

•Most elementary teachers are female. Can this cause problems in learning? Explain.

I think that this can cause problems with learning. Some students may not learn as well with female teachers as they do with male teachers. Male students could be attracted to a female teacher so they may not pay attention to the lesson and same with the female students.

Gender "Bashing" and "Girl Power" Article Questions

•Do you agree with the authors of the articles? Why or why not?

I totally agree with the authors of the articles. I don’t think that it is right for any gender to put down another gender. But I think that the shirts are ment to be mean and target males. Like one of the articles said, if it was the other way around where guys were saying girls were stupid, there would be something said about it.

•Do you think that people are "overreacting" Why or why not?

I don’t think that people are “overreacting”. I could become a serious problem. If the problem doesn’t get fixed now then it will never get fixed. People need to know that it is wrong to pick at another gender. How would they feel if it was their gender getting picked at?

•Would you allow your daughter (if you had a daughter) to wear this type of shirt?

I would not let my daughter wear the shirt. I don’t want my daughter to believe that boys are stupid because no gender is stupid. She needs to know not to pick on a person just because they are a different gender.

•What are your general feelings towards "message" apparel?

I love message apparel but only if the message on the shirt does not discriminate against anything. I think that a person should not buy a shirt if it shows any type of discrimination.

"Gender" Article Questions

•In your schooling, have you ever experienced first-hand (or observed) gender discrimination by a teacher? Describe, but do not list any names.

If I remember right, I think I had a PE/health teacher that let us girls get away with more than the boys. Like one time this girl asked him if we could go to the gym instead of class and he let us all go. Another day a guy had asked him the same question and he told him that we have to get a little bit of work done before we went to the gym.

•According to the article, who benefits the most from conventional teaching strategies - boys or girls? Why is this?

Boys benefits the most from conventional teaching strategies. This is because research says that boys need more attention. In the article it says that boys are more likely to be called on to answer a harder question than female students. It also says that most female faculty expect less of their female students than they do with their male students.

•What will YOU do to eliminate gender inequities in YOUR classroom? Describe.

What I will do in my classroom is that I will make sure that I don’t separate girls from boys when I am setting up my desk. I will try to pair up a guy with a girl and vice versa. If I do any type of group work I will make sure that there is not one group that is all one gender.

Summary:

I really liked doing this lesson. I did not know that girls were not as look upon as guys. It was a very interesting lesson. I learned a lot of stuff that I did not know was happening. I do agree with some of the stuff that I was reading. The articles that were involved with this lesson were very interesting as well.

Research Question:

What are something that we as teachers can do to help each classroom to not discriminate against a certain gender?

Research Analysis:

I found an article online that helps explain a lot about each gender in school. One part in the article, it talks about the gender dynamics and what impact they have on each gender. With each gender the gender dynamic will vary. Sometime they will be very hard to see what the dynamic is but other times it is very clear of what it is. In the article, it also tells that males and female have different views of how they will handle supporting their families as well as how they handle a tough situation.

Most of the research that I looked at was saying that female students are not the “favorite” gender in the schools. But on a website that I found it says that now a days girls are more involved in academics than boys are. They are taking higher level courses in high school than boys. Most girls perform better on test then boys do. However, more guys, as the website says, are more likely to be suspended and get in trouble than girls. Male students do not have the help that they need to succeed in school. Most boys are believing that they don’t get much attention as well as girls do.

Research Summary:

I really enjoyed researching my question. There were somethings that I didn’t think were true until I researched my question. I think that each gender deserves to have an equal advantage in the classrooms. Each gender deserves to be treated the same. One thing that I didn’t know was that boys were the dominant gender in the school. I always felt like girls and boys were about the same when it came to school.
