Lesson 6
In this lesson we had to read two different articles. One was by Susan Black and the other was by Lottie Joiner.
Lesson 6 Discussion
-
In the Susan Black article, what are some examples of "unconstitutional instruction?" Do you agree with these guidelines? Why or why not?
-
Some examples of unconstitutional instruction would be assuming all students are Christians. Teachers should make sure that they have other peoples religion in mind when they are just teaching things in a Christian perspective. Teachers who make students memorize bible verses is unconstitutional. I agree with the unconstitutional instructions. You cant just teach Christian things because not everyone is a Christian. I think that things should be taught from different views from different religions.
-
In the Susan Black article, what is legally permissible with respect to teaching about religion?
-
When teachers teach about holidays, teachers can cover aspects of religion. Teachers are allowed to celebrate the religions but should not be promoting the religion to force their students to believe what they do. Teachers can cover the history and the influences of the religion
-
In the Lottie Joiner article, what four points of guidance do court decisions have with respect to the teaching of evolution?
-
The first thing is to learn what is and isn't legal. By doing that you have to talk to the school attorney. You should talk to them to make sure that you have a full understanding of what is going on. Teachers are allowed to legally teach scientific not religious.
-
How do you believe the issue of evolution versus intelligent design should be handled in the public school system? Provide some reasons for your position.
-
I believe that both should be taught because many people have many different opinions on what they believe about it. Some may think that we came from monkeys and others believe that we are created from their religious views. One example is that Adam and Eve was the first on earth.

Summary:
-
I really enjoyed doing this lesson. I think that it is a good thing that students hear the different perspectives from different views on religion.
