This lesson was about single sex classrooms. I think this was a good lesson. We had to answer based on our oppinion of a singled sex classroom.
Lesson 4 Discussion
List and describe 2-3 possible advantages of single sex classrooms.
Advantages of an all girls classroom; Without boys to inhibit them or grab the spotlight, girls speak up more freely and more often in the classroom. Girls wont feel like they have to impress the guys with their answers to the questions. The curriculum is likely to include women in nontraditional roles and positions of authority. Women could take the positions that normally a man would take.
List and describe 2-3 potential disadvantages of single sex classrooms.
Disadvantages of an all boy classroom; An All boys school may reinforce gender stereotypes and contempt for girls. All boys schools or classes may be used as punishment by parents or teachers for boys who are not doing well in a coed environment. Parents may use this as an act of punishment so that they themselves wont have to do it.
After watching the videos and reading the articles, describe your stance on the single sex classroom issue. Provide some reasons why you agree or disagree with the concept.
I think the single sex classrooms are a great idea. I believe that each sex will get better grades because they wont have distractions that there would be in a mix sex classroom. I agree because on of the videos said that the grades went up and the discipline went down.
Would you want to be educated in single-sex classrooms? Why or why not?
I think that I would want to be educated in a single-sex classroom. I believe that it would be a good experience to be able to see how the learning process would be. I think this because there can be a distraction in learning when it comes to each sex. Some people get distracted so easily.
Would you want your children educated in single-sex classrooms? Why or why not?
I think that I would want my children to be educated in a single- sex classroom. I think this because I think that this would be a great experience for my children. There also wouldn’t be that competition between the boys and the girls to try to impress on another.
Are single-sex classrooms a form of discrimination? Explain.
I don't think that single-sex classrooms are a form of discrimination. I think this because both sex's are learning the same thing. They are just learning differently.
Summary:
I really enjoyed doing this lesson. This lesson really opened my eyes about something that I never thought that I would agree on. This can be a rough subject because most people do not agree with single sex classroom.
