In this lesson, we had to talk about SES. We had to tell how different SES's(high and low) differed in education. In this lesson we also had to see how school systems are affected because of the area the schools are located. We learn that families are  different by their education, job, and other stuff just by where they live.

Lesson 3

Lesson 3

How is SES measured? Explain.

SES measures of the influence that the social environment had on individuals, families, communities, and schools. Each class acts different towards the environment. If you’re in one social class your impact of the social environment may be bigger or smaller than another social class. Same as with the schools. If one school is bigger than another school, that school will react different to the social environment than that of a smaller school.

Describe at least 2 negative effects of low SES.

One negative effect of low SES is poverty. Poverty is the lower class. They don’t have as much things/money as the middle and upper classes. They tend to have a greater impact from the social environment. If people are in poverty, they tend to be the people who work the hardest at their jobs because they don’t make as much as a middle or upper class person would. They struggle more in the social environment as well. Another negative effect of low SES is race. Race may also have a bigger impact in the social environment. If a person is a Latino, they may not get paid or be treated the way that a white or black person will be treated. Same way with a black and a white person. But the Black and Latinos may have a more of a social impact other than a white person.

Describe some of the differences concerning education and student achievement levels in Low SES families versus High SES families.

The parenting styles of low SES families and high SES families are different. The low SES parents tend to make their children work harder than a higher SES parent would. The low SES parents may have higher achievement goals than that of a higher SES parent would have. The low SES parents will most likely make sure that the children will be obedience with no questions asked, but the high SES parents are not as disciplined to their children. Low SES families tend to want their children to fall into society’s ways and the high SES families tend to want their children to go out and explore and be their own person.

Describe some options that are available for Low SES families concerning education.

One option that the families can take is putting their child in head start. This program has been around since the 1960’s and it helps the low SES children get a better foundation of learning for their education. They will be well prepared for school.

Explain how socioeconomic status determines the economic conditions of persons.

The socioeconomic status determines the economic conditions of a person from their income. Whatever a person makes can determine what SES they will fall under. If they have a higher income then they will be in the high SES classification. If they are have a lower income then they will be in the low SES classification. But income isn’t the only thing that determines the economic conditions of a person. Also the social class can determine the SES.

Can a person change their SES? If so, describe how. If not, describe why not.

I believe that a person can change their SES. I believe this because if the family member change their job and make more money, then that’s one way it could be changed. Another way that a family could change their SES is if they move to a different neighborhood. Those are just two of the ways that a person could change their SES.

Concerning the YouTube video, describe what you learned

What I learned in the video was that what people think about how wealth is shared in the United Stated is not what the reality of how it really is split up. The wealth is split up into percentages. The bottom percentages are the poor people, the middle percent’s are the middle people and the top percentages are the richest people in America. The poorest people are not even getting enough to help them get by. They are below the poverty line. In reality, the middle class are just barely getting by and even the richest are not making what people thought they were making. But the top one percent is getting the most wealth that is shared.

Summary:

I really like reading over this lesson. It was very interesting to learn about the SES of families because I didn’t know much about it. What I found interesting was that there is so many different things that can classify a person’s SES. I didn’t know that where a person lives’ help determine what their SES will be. It was also interesting to see how the school systems in the different SES neighborhoods. I didn’t know that the teachers where paid according to what school they taught at.

Research Question:

What impact does being in a low SES family have on a student?

Research Analysis:

The research that I found said that low SES children are the one who face poverty the most. They have higher levels of having more problems than anyone else who is not in a low SES family. They have a problems with psychological health, physical health, and education. With their psychological health, they will have a negative effect. Later in life they are more likely to develop the Alzheimer’s disease. They may also suffer from problems such as depression, ADHD, and anxiety. If a child is in a low SES family they may start becoming more aggressive towards their family or peers. The child then could become a threat to themselves and others.

They have trouble with their physical health as well. The effects may not hurt them but it could cause them to not to fit in with society. Some of the effects may last throughout the child’s life. If a child is stressed out they may develop an eating disorder. They could be over eating to take away the stress or they could just not eat and get really sick. With education, the lower SES kids may not go into school knowing what higher SES kids know. The kids in lower SES families are increasing the dropout rate at the high school level. They don’t score as well as other students do on test. These students are the ones who can be victims of bulling as well.
